Disclaimer: This guide provides practical guidance, not legal advice. It only states Woking rules, which are confirmed by the official council tools/pages linked below.

Who's in charge of what in Woking?

Moving out in Woking means you will deal with several authorities. The systems and rules are specific to each. Here’s who’s in charge of what when moving out in Woking:

Knowing which official body is responsible for a move-out-related service saves you time and energy, streamlining your handover.

Definitions

CRC: Community Recycling Centre (also called "the tip") - where you can bring large items and garden waste yourself.

CPZ: Controlled Parking Zone - areas where parking is restricted during certain hours and permits or payment are necessary for legal parking.

JWS: Joint Waste Solutions - the organisation responsible for bin collections and bulky waste bookings for Woking residents.

Quick decision tree for your move

Answer the following questions—it will help you understand where your planning should start:

  • Will you need guaranteed removal van parking?
If you already have a permit for Heathside Crescent or the Victoria Place car park, manage it by logging into the ZatPermit portal.
  • Does the moving van need on-street parking in a controlled zone? This isn't confirmed in this guide- access the Surrey CC parking suspensions page for details about the process.
  • Do you have overflowing bins?
If you don’t have enough capacity for your moving-out waste, you can request a temporary additional bin at Woking.gov.uk. Please note that approval isn't guaranteed.
  • Have bulky items to dispose of?
If your bulky items are in good condition and can be used, contact Woking Community Furniture or Furniturelink Surrey for possible free collection. Visit Joint Waste Solutions to book a council collection for large items you can no longer use.
  • Do you need to dispose of DIY waste, old furniture, or garden waste?
You can take them to the recycling centre—it’s open 8 am-4 pm most days (check current hours). Should you want to use a van or trailer, start by getting a CRC van permit—your entry will be denied if you don’t have one.

Step 1: Sorting out parking

Alleviate the pressure at the handover and organise parking well in advance. Understand your options and access the Woking parking hub page.

What you need to do:

  • Check your current permits: Already have a 24-hour resident's permit for Heathside Crescent or Victoria Place? Log in to the ZatPermit portal to check whether it's still valid for your moving dates.
  • Blue Badge holders: If you’re a Blue Badge holder, fill in their online form to apply early for your Woking blue badge car park exit sticker. Once you get the sticker, you will be allowed to park for free in council car parks.
  • See parking restrictions: If you move out of a zone with controlled parking, check out the CPZ boundaries map to see where restrictions apply and when.
  • Removal van parking: This guide doesn’t include confirmations for bay suspensions or special dispensation for removal vehicles. Instead, visit the Surrey CC parking pages or contact Woking Borough Council's Parking team directly.

Important parking rules to watch out for:

If you need a new residential permit, please note that you can’t have more than one per address. The processing takes up to 5 working days. You will pay daily parking charges until the approved permit is issued. Have proof of address and vehicle documents when you access the ZatPermit to apply. Before you apply, review the official fees.

The price for a car park season ticket depends on your vehicle's CO₂ emissions band. Find out how much you will pay using their fees checker.

Are you a Blue Badge holder? You still have to apply for a car park exit sticker (there's a £25 fee). You will have to pay for parking until the sticker arrives. Upload a scan of your Blue Badge and submit your application here.

If you arrange club or event permits, remember that the number of permits issued for an organisation is limited.  Need several permits for the same date? Follow their club/event process early.

Should you park in a CPZ, please note that all enforcement actions follow the instructions displayed on posted signage exactly. You will get a penalty when the zone or timing is wrong. Before you book or pay, take a good look at the CPZ map.

Step 2: Planning your waste and bins

The last thing you want to deal with at the handover is bags of rubbish. Get the bin strategy right and start by learning when your bins are collected. Use the address checker.

What you need to do:

  • Find out your exact collection days: Get the correct collection schedule using the address checker. Collection days vary by waste type. For instance, rubbish and recycling collections alternate, while waste and food waste collections have their own.
  • Present your bins on time: On collection day, you must take the bins outside, at the property boundary by 6 am. Should you miss the 6 am timing, you will have to wait for the following scheduled collection—you can set a reminder.
  • If necessary, ask for extra capacity: Request a temporary additional bin if you’re producing more waste than usual. The council will examine if you meet the eligibility criteria—it’s not guaranteed you will get it.
  • Report missed collections as soon as you notice them: If your bin doesn't get collected, report it online the same day your bins are missed. Calling isn’t a solution. Only reports that go through the online system are accepted.

Important bin rules to watch out for:

If you present the wrong bin outside, it won’t be emptied – different types of waste are collected on different days. Rubbish and recycling collections are fortnightly. Distinct schedules apply to garden, food, electrical, and textiles collections. Before you take the bins outside, verify your specific day.

If you put the bins outside later than 6 am, the collection crews will miss them. Bring the bins back inside and wait for the following collection day. Stay informed about changes and verify the collection updates.

Have extra waste? Assuming that will be picked up with regular bins isn’t wise. You must apply and receive the council’s approval for temporary additional bins. Keep in mind that getting an extra bin doesn’t mean it’s permanent—it’s only temporary. Request online well in advance.

If your collection gets missed, you must report it online—don’t call. There won’t be a rescheduling or resolving if you don’t report the missed collection. Address the issue right away and report it here.

Step 3: Getting rid of bulky items

You cannot put furniture, mattresses, appliances, and other large items in the regular bins. However, you have several legal disposal options. For starters, visit the bulky waste booking page.

What you need to do:

  • Are your items still usable? Contact Woking Community Furniture or Furniturelink Surrey if you have beds, sofas, or appliances in good condition. They might collect them for free—you will help others and save some money too. Visit the council's bulky waste page to find the contact details.
  • Book council collection for non-usable items: Book a collection through Joint Waste Solutions for worn-out or broken items. While booking, you will need to pay by card.
  • List everything correctly: include every item you want to be collected when booking. The crew will only pick up what’s on the list—they won’t collect any extras.
  • Look for discounts: You might be eligible for a concessionary discount if you receive certain benefits. When you book, have your benefit reference number handy.

Important bulky waste rules to watch out for:

Don’t try to present outside items that aren't accepted- they will be left behind, and you risk getting a penalty. Business waste, rubble, or building materials aren’t accepted for the bulky collection service. Avoid disappointment and read the accepted items list before booking.

If you’re not eligible for a discount, you will pay the collection fee in full.  Concessionary rates are available only for some benefits. When booking, you will have to provide proof of eligibility. If you apply for discounts,  keep your benefit details handy.

Should you place more items outside than you booked, the extra items won’t be collected. The collection crew picks up only items that are booked and paid for.  Avoid being left with uncollected items and submit a detailed, accurate inventory.

If you have reusable items, think about donating them to someone else. It will be cheaper than a paid council collection and less sustainable too. Don’t rush to book a collection; contact the reuse organisations first – you will save money and help someone in need too.

Step 4: Using the recycling centre (the tip)

Want to clear out lots of items yourself, especially a car full of stuff or garden waste? Take a trip to The Community Recycling Centre at Martyrs Lane. Start by planning your visit to the Woking CRC page.

What you need to do:

  • See opening hours: The centre is open 8 am-4 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am-4 pm at weekends. On Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day, the tip is closed. Before taking the trip, see the current opening hours.
  • If necessary, get a van permit: If you go with a van, pickup truck, or trailer, you have to start by applying for a Surrey van permit.  Your entry will be denied if you don’t have the correct permit. Access the Surrey CC CRC portal to submit an application.
  • Budget for DIY waste charges: As long as you don’t exceed the limits, you won’t pay for some construction and DIY waste. You will pay when you go over the limit. Have your card to pay at the gate.
  • You pay when bringing tyres: You will pay £5 per tyre; bicycle tyres are exempt. Payments can only be made with Visa and Mastercard.

Important recycling centre rules:

If you go outside opening hours, you won’t be able to enter. The opening hours are strict: 8 am-4 pm Monday to Friday, 9 am-4 pm weekends. On major holidays, the centre is closed. Before taking the trip, see the current times.

If you go with a van or trailer without a permit, your entry will be denied. You don’t need a permit for a car; you will need one for anything larger.  You will pay £10 for a van permit; it covers up to 12 visits per year. Don’t delay submitting an application for your permit.

Should you bring too much DIY waste, you'll pay extra. The free allowance is 2 x 50-litre bags OR 1 large item (max 200x75cm) OR 1 plasterboard sheet per visit. You will pay £5.60 per bag or item, or £12 per extra plasterboard sheet, payable by card only. Check out the full charging details.

Want to bring tyres? You will pay £5 per tyre (except bicycle tyres) by card. The tyres will be rejected if you can’t pay. Before you load the tyres in the car, read the tyre disposal rules.

If you bring business waste or your van load is loose, you won’t be allowed to enter. Plus, you risk enforcement action. You can only bring household waste to the centre. Learn here about your business waste disposal options.

Your move-out sequence

Following a specific, field-proven sequence will keep your move-out seamless and pressure-free. Thanks to it, you will be able to create the evidence that will protect you from common challenges.

Removal first. Then: Clean → Photos → Meter reads → Keys last.

Arrange your parking permits and recycling centre access well in advance – booking and submitting applications are necessary for most. Book at least a week in advance for waste and bulky collections—slots fill up quickly, especially during busy periods like the end of the month. That’s when many people move out.

Keys last: Do not return keys until you're done taking photos/video and meter reads.

Local challenges to watch out for

Moving out in Woking brings some challenges that you should be aware of:

Parking suspensions and permits can be tricky. Suspensions aren’t possible for all parking bays. Some may require long lead times, which can catch people off guard. Visit the Surrey CC parking pages for removal van parking or bay suspensions. Do it early, as our guide doesn’t provide confirmations about the process.

Bulky waste collections require booking. During busy periods, especially at the end of the month when lots of tenancies end, collection slots fill up quickly. Book your collection as soon as your moving day is confirmed—you don’t want to have to move furniture at the handover.

Bin timing in flats can be tricky. If you move out of a flat or estate with communal bin stores, bins that are presented late or are overfilled will be left behind by the collection crews. After bringing them back inside, you will have to wait for the following collection. It can be stressful when there are so many things to juggle.

Timeline for your move

Good timing will alleviate the pressure on your move-out and minimise the risk of delays:

  • Parking permits for town centre locations: Apply at least 5 working days before your move date. It takes time for Woking Borough Council to process applications and issue permits.
  • Additional bin requests: Request additional bins at least a week ahead. The council has to assess if your request is justified. Both the assessment and the delivery of the additional bin take time—that’s why you should request it well in advance.
  • Bulky waste collections: Secure a slot that works best with your moving timeline and book at least a week in advance. Popular dates get booked up quickly.
  • Recycling centre van permits: If you need to use a van or trailer, apply for your Surrey CC permit at least a week ahead to ensure it arrives in time.

Cleaning priorities for your deposit

Focus your cleaning efforts on areas that get the most inspected and flagged:

Begin with the kitchen - clean inside all appliances, wipe down cupboard interiors, and tackle any grease buildup. In bathrooms, focus on removing limescale from taps and shower heads, and ensure tiles and grout are clean.

Clean room by room, wiping down skirting boards, light switches, and door handles. These small details make a big difference to how clean the property looks overall.

Take reference photos of key areas, especially sinks, the oven interior, and carpet edges, during your final walkthrough. In case of disputes regarding the property’s condition at handover, the photos will serve as irrefutable proof.

For a comprehensive, in-depth approach, check out our move-out cleaning checklist, which covers everything room by room.

Your move-out proof folder

Protecting your deposit means having evidence of the property's condition at the time you left. Take timestamped photos of every cleaned area, including close-ups of appliances, carpets, and any existing wear and tear.

Don't forget to record your final meter readings and take photos of the meter displays. If your deposit is disputed later, this evidence will be handled through the government-backed tenancy deposit schemes, not the council.

Store all your booking confirmations, receipts, and correspondence in one place - you might need them to prove that you’ve followed the correct disposal procedures.

Common situations and how to handle them

Living in a managed block or flat

What triggers this: You're in a large apartment block or estate managed by a letting agent, with communal bin storage areas.

What you need to decide: Contact your building manager or letting agent to learn how the bin storage works and where bulk waste should be placed. Not all estates have council bulky waste pickup - some have their own arrangements.

What goes wrong: You risk enforcement actions or fines from the building management if you leave unaccepted items in the incorrect communal area.

How to fix it: Check your collection day by accessing the Joint Waste Solutions page. If you have uncertainties about your building’s arrangements, book a council bulky waste collection.

Local detail: Regardless of building-specific arrangements, Woking apartment blocks must follow the official bin storage and timing rules set by Joint Waste Solutions.

House with lots of bulky items or garden waste

What triggers this: You're a householder with large furniture items, garden waste from clearing outside spaces, or lots of DIY waste from home improvements.

What you need to decide: Whether to book several bulky waste collections or make trips to the recycling centre yourself. Remember, you need to apply for a permit if you use a van to go to the recycling centre.

What goes wrong: Entry is denied if you arrive at the tip with a van without a permit. Having too much waste for your regular bins means items get left behind.

How to fix it: List all your large items for bulky collection through Joint Waste Solutions. Get your van permit early from Surrey CC if you plan to take a trip to the recycling centre in a van.

Local detail: Woking and Surrey recycling centre enforcement is strict - van and trailer permits are mandatory, with no exceptions (Surrey CC permit system).

Last-minute move with disposal urgency

What triggers this: You're facing a short-notice move-out, eviction, or urgent deadline, and need to dispose of waste quickly and legally.

What you need to decide: With limited time, prioritise legally compliant disposal methods and act fast if collections are missed.

What goes wrong: Dumping waste illegally or presenting bins incorrectly results in non-collection. Plus, you risk enforcement actions. Should you go to the recycling centre outside the opening hours, you won’t have a place to take waste.

How to fix it: If a collection is missed, report it immediately through the Woking missed bin portal. Use the recycling centre directly if it's open (bring ID and a utility bill). Arrange correct, licensed disposal for any business waste or rubble.

Local detail: Woking bin collection and recycling centre cutoff times are strictly enforced. You won’t be able to enter if you go outside the opening hours. Check current CRC opening times and report any waste issues online immediately.

What could go wrong

Even with good planning, things can go wrong. Here's how to recover from common problems:

  • Parking permit delayed: Application takes time, and you don’t get a permit on time→ you're paying daily parking charges → contact Woking Borough Council parking team directly and keep receipts for any extra costs.
  • Bulky collection fully booked: No slots available for your moving date → items are not picked up, or you dump them illegally → take a trip to the recycling centre instead, or contact reuse organisations for usable items.
  • Bin collection missed: Crew leaves your bins behind → waste builds up, and you can't clear the property → don’t delay and access the Woking's online system to report the missed collection right away.
  • Van permit doesn't arrive: You applied for a van permit, but it isn’t delivered on time → entry with van full of waste is denied→ use a car for multiple trips instead, or arrange private waste disposal.
  • Wrong items in bulky booking: Put out items not on your booking list → extra items are not collected → book another collection or take refused items to recycling centre yourself.
  • Recycling centre closed: Arrive outside opening hours or on closure day → waste still in your car and you have no disposal options→ check current opening times and organise alternative dates.
  • Additional bin request refused: Council doesn't approve extra waste capacity → regular bins overflow and waste is left behind → book bulky collection for large items or take several recycling centre trips.
  • CPZ parking fine: Parked in the wrong zone or at the wrong time → you get a penalty charge→ verify the CPZ boundaries and appeal if you believe it's unlawful.
